Mysteries on Both Sides of the Pond
Book Discussion Series to begin October 28th
"Mysteries on Both Sides of the Pond" is a book discussion series offered through the support of the New Hampshire Humanities Council. This mystery series includes professional and amateur detectives from both sides of the Atlantic. These page-turners explore the meaning of personal justice and justice of the state; cultural differences, class distinctions, gender roles; the role of fiction as social commentary; and the longstanding traditions of the British "country house" murder mystery and the American Urban "hard-boiled detective novel.
Whipple Free Library is pleased to host two book discussions. On Tuesday, October 28th at 7 PM we will discuss A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George. Scotland Yard detectives do not believe that the apparent perpetrator of a savage crime is guilty, in spite of her first and last words, "I did it. And I'm not sorry." The truth will be found in the village's tangled web of secrets, scandals, and horrendous crimes. Donna Decker of Franklin Pierce University will lead the discussion.
The second discussion will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 18th at 7 PM. In St. Alban's Fire by Archer Mayor, Vermont police hero Lt. Joe Gunther investigates suspicious fires that have occurred around Burlington, VT which have resulted in the deaths of one teenager and a herd of dairy cows. Are the fires coincidental or the work of a clever arsonist? The fast-paced plot will keep readers guessing until the end! Matthew Winkler of Granite State College will lead the discussion.
Books will be available for checkout 3-4 weeks before each discussion.
