A new and larger Library is an essential investment in the quality of life in New Boston – and a gift to future generations. There has been strong support for a new Library as evidenced by the vote in 2001 to purchase the land, and significant support for public funding of the building. The votes to fund construction, however, did not achieve the required super majorities. The Library Trustees have returned to the drawing board and drafted plans for a smaller building – now half the size of earlier versions - and initiated a renewed fundraising campaign to raise as much as possible in donations as the “private” portion of the cost of the new Library. Contributions to date have already far exceeded all other fundraising initiatives in the Town’s history. The Trustees plan to work with the Capital Improvements Committee to place a bond of up to $500,000 on the 2009 Town warrant for the “public” share of the costs.
Both the new fundraising and building plans have been well received by Town officials. In fact, the New Boston Bulletin reported, in the November 2007 issue, “For the first time ever, the Whipple Free Library Trustees were given a round of applause from the CIP for their revised proposal to fund a new library building!”
